Weight gain is strongly correlated with breast cancer with most women gaining between 5-13lb. 5 year follow up studies indicate that this weight is generally not lost after the patient is cancer free. It is suspected that the cancer alters the body’s sensitivity to insulin and change cytokine pathways.

Janelsins et al 2011 published a study showing that participating in a tai chi chuan class three times a week compared to an health education class had significant effects on body mass, fat mass, insulin sensitivity and cytokine levels.

Tai chi chuan has also been demonstrated to decrease blood pressure and help prevent falls among seniors.

Given that it costs very little to implement a tai chi chuan class and results across most markers show good correlations- many oncology and geriatric centres should consider implementing an intro to tai chi chuan class.
