Fernandez-Fernandez et al 2011 measured groups of competitive male tennis players. They showed that HIIT training increased VO2peak and tennis specific endurance but had no effect on jumping or sprinting. Repeated sprint training demonstrated an increase in VO2peak but not as large as the HIIT. It did improve jumping and sprinting abilities but only had moderate effects on tennis specific endurance.

This would indicate that off-season, using repeated sprints as part of general fitness would be a good plan but when pre-season and in-season cycles occur, it’s time to switch up to HIIT. While fewer general qualities will be trained, those that are trained will be trained to a higher degree.
